Professor Ir Dr Mohd Shahir Liew obtained his degree and PhD from Texas in 1983 and 1988, respectively. As a practicing engineer, he has seen his stint as a professional consulting engineer for offshore engineering in the USA and the Asian region for a period of 23 years predominantly in capital and development projects. With a total project value of over USD 4.5 b, Prof Liew joined the academia in 2009 with the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department, University Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) and became the Head of the Dept in 2011. He was made the Dean of Geoscience and Petroleum Engineering in 2014 and the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Research, Innovation, and Commercialization in 2017 and have made UTP the no. 1 research university in Malaysia. In December of 2023, he joined University of Nottingham as the Vice Provost for Research and Knowledge Exchange.
With his vast experience in offshore engineering, the Chinese Government appointed him as the National High Foreign Talent Expert for 2 years on offshore engineering with China University of Petroleum. He is currently the Energy Institute UK (Malaysia) Chairman and is chairing the Energy Transition – Malaysia Initiative looking into the impact of energy transition to the development in Malaysia. He is also actively involved on consultancy work related to decarbonization, carbon foot print, monetization of carbon credit, and ESG related to corporation. He has over 350 publications in journals, conferences, and policy paper with 3 engineering books to his credit. Today, he continues to support professional development of NGOs in energy transition and has a strong belief in creating leaders for tomorrow through mentoring. His motto: Leader creates Leaders.
